Invitation to all architects of the world

Invitation to all architects of the world: Contribute in the
making of the future of architectural thought

World Architecture Community, launched on March 1, with 200 honorary members including Hans Hollein, Mario Botta, and Fumihiko Maki, is probably the first interactive database created to provide an opportunity for all local practices to become internationally recognized. Unique features of this portal enable all members to contribute in the making of the future of architectural thought by submitting, discussing, editing, rating, sharing their work.

While there are many channels that promote architecture, WA will probably be the first interactive database created to provide an opportunity for all local practices to present their work to the international audience and become internationally recognized.

It is evident that content capacity in printed media is very limited that only a few can access. Appearing in international or even local media is highly competitive and requires grand projects; therefore local practices rarely have the chance to be criticized and the agenda of architecture concentrates on a few names. On the other hand, there are many young, talented architects, passionately designing buildings in the different parts of the world. Unfortunately, as they cannot appear on the media, they are solely criticized by their customers. -Impetus for creativity, however, is criticism. WA realizes the dream of local practices to be discussed by prominent scholars and academicians from different countries via the platform offered by the internet . Architects and scholars from ALL countries of the world are invited to submit their buildings and writings freely. The aim of WA is to highlight the different quests of local practices in the global agenda and initiate a new definition for architectural media. WA Community Portal also aims to present the work of all contemporary masters of architecture in a concise form eventually with their support of the educational premises of the project.

Another unique feature of the portal is that Issue Pages can be created by all members as a collaborative effort to create connections across the individual resources on the internet. For instance, an architect being inspired from local culture, can create an issue page to define his theoretical discourse that has guided his design, and relate his buildings to this issue page so that theory and practice in architecture can -come together within the same context. This independent global forum and extensive database will be also a big occasion for theorists. They will be able to -access examples, works, and efforts from most diverse regions and cultures of the world and will have the chance to get in touch with practice at a global scale.

All members will be able to submit links, articles, projects (even unrealized or projects under construction can be submitted) to this completely free international portal. Contributions from all members will have equitable chances to be represented, promoted, reviewed and criticized at this international arena.

You can read more about the story and philosophy of WA here

WHAT DID HONORARY MEMBERS SAY ABOUT WA?

The WA Community initiative has over 150 Honorary Members who have accepted the invitation to collaborate. Complete list of Honorary Members include important architects and scholars like Joseph Rykwert, Eric Owen Moss, Bart Prince, Fumihiko Maki, Udo Kultermann, Dennis Sharp, Farshid Moussavi, William Lim, Hans Hollein, Michael Sorkin, Arata Isozaki, Mario Botta, Kenneth Yeang, and Renata Holod among many others...

For the complete list of Honorary Members click Honorary Members
"The potential of this forum could be enormous, and your concept has that hallmark of all truly great ideas, which is to say something that seems so brilliantly simple that only after it becomes a reality does one wonder how it could not have always existed? There is so much good that can be done if certain ideas in our field of experience could only be shared more easily, and though the technology to do this has been available for quite some time now, it clearly has not been used to anything approaching its full potential, which your initiative promises to expand."
Cultural institution of non-visual perception space

     Subject of investigation: non-visual perception space, in which orientation with the help of visual perception is impossible. It can be:
- Any space, perceived by blind person.("Natural space”);
- Interior space, influenced by artificial factors, which make visual perception impossible ("artificial space”).
     It was held an analysis of non-visual channels use potentials for different orientation needs. We proposed 6 hypothetical methods of non-visual perception space organization guided by that analysis. Among them:
- BRAILLE-BASED SELF-POSITIONING METHOD;
- “SCAN-DIRECTIONS” METHOD;
- “SURFACE’S VOICE TEXTURE” METHOD;
- “AIR STREAMS” METHOD;
     The result of this work was development of the multimeter method of non-visual perception space organization using those 6 hypothetical methods.
     It was held an experiment for the purpose of testing the effectiveness of the multimeter method of non-visual perception space organization. A special application software, which lets make movements inside virtual space, formed with the help of that multimeter method, was developed for the test. There were 4 labyrinths, attached to the application software, which alternated in random numbers principle, that’s why testing participant could not know which of the labyrinths he was in. The test was held inside the test room, which was appointed with an acoustic system (5 speakers located round face of a testing participant) , and a manipulation device, which lets make movements inside virtual space. Display, representing all movements of the testing participant inside virtual space, was located on the exterior side of test room’s wall. So, the testing participant had an opportunity to see the trajectory of his movements only after his test ended.
     537 tests were made in 10 days. Test results detailed analyses revealed the most rational geometry type of non-visual perception space. Further development of “Cultural institution of non-visual perception space” was based on this geometry.
     Complex consists of two independent functional parts: cells of non-visual perception space block (which is a private part of the complex) and a non-visual art gallery (public part). Each of these parts has it’s own entrances, horizontal and vertical communications, complexes of attendant quarters.
     AT THE SAME TIME, INTERIOR SPACE OF THESE TWO INDEPENDENT PARTS SEEMS TO BE INFINITE. IT HAS NO CHARACTERISTICS EXCEPT COLOR: IT IS WHITE. OWING TO ILLUSIONARY IMMATERIALITY OF ENVIRONMENT, OBJECTS, FILLING IT, LOOK EVEN MORE REAL, BECAUSE THEY BECOME OBJECTS OUT OF SPACE, THOSE, EXISTING IN VACUUM.
     Non-visual art gallery is a space, where actual expositions, orientated on tactile and acoustic perception.
     Cells of non-visual perception space block sides with gallery, starting with 2nd floor. It consists of two fire tanks. Each of the tanks has it’s own entrances, horizontal and vertical communications. Relying on non-visual perception space institution visit tunes analyses, we defined 4 rational space typologies of cells. Each floor of this block is assembled of these cells.
     An important pedestrian axis, which connects zone of cottages with one of the main road junction in the town, passes the site. A stop of high-speed transport, connecting town with Kyiv (the capital city) is envisaged on this road junction. In order to preserve that axis, we decided to create a composition of a sailing structure, which leans on two posts.
     This decision became possible owing to spatial tied steel frame spanning 6 x 6 m. All transverse and longitudinal bents of this frame contain ties, essential for uniform allocation of the load.

http://altroom.org/eng/diplom/index.htm - Project's flesh presentation in English.
Please, don't forget to leave your comments

The only thing, which can help our student is a foot-bridge, connecting academy and the hostel in the shortest way. This bridge will not only decrease the everyday loss of time, but it will fill student with high feelings, while his admiring the beautiful scenery. But the main bridge’s contribution is students’ timely arriving for the lectures, which will improve academy results and increase nation professionalism, as a result.
   However, just one foot-bridge can’t make our student happy.
Children's art gallery in Novosibirsk

What is children's art? Craft, or imagination? Children are taught craft at school.
It is boring to talk about it. Fantasy is quite another matter. Children couldn’t assimilate the totality
of stereotypes, that’s why their ability to fill casual things with unusual meaning is amazing. Children's fantasy becomes the most apparant, when they play. Children’s art process also appears to be a game. Seeing this process is often more interesting, then seeing it’s results. We proposed to develop children’s art gallery as an information gathering center. We also proposed to make the exhibition interactive to diversify the exposition. We mean a number of extra functional zones creation, for gallery’s quality enrichment, when we speak about interactivity. Children’s art process demonstration in real-time operation mode: 1. digital hall, appointed with multimedia displays, representing slides and videos, stored on the server; 2. Information gathering with the purpose of further circulation as a magazine ( within Russia ) and as an internet site ( for the whole world ).
So we get a complicated structure, which has to be a large floating space. It seems to be nice for being children’s art gallery. We proposed to use this building also at night, so some additional functions have to be provided: - festival film’s show. - Disco-parties holding. That’s why we had to develop an opportunity for combined and separate usage of zones.

A competitive project.
Two projects, AltRoom submited for the competition, held by municipality of Novosibirsk.
http://altroom.org/eng/children/index.htm - here you can see both projects and concept in English
http://altroom.org/eng/n-s/index.htm - the exhibition's English flesh version

Creating sense of dematerialization . Makes people understand, that reality is not necessarily visible.
We create the illusion of invisibility with the help of mirror surfaces. This effect increases with spectator’s moving toward designed point of observation, until complete illusive disappearing of the construction part happens.
         - 2. People in the sky.
We create the illusion, that the upper glass volume is dangling in the air with people inside. The affect is achieved thanks to the invisibility illusion of the lower part.
         - 3. People on the Earth.
We create the illusion of people, walking under the dandling volume to increase the illusion of invisibility.

To create the illusion of invisibility we use four mirror surfaces:
         - Trapping screen - installed on the back wall of the construction - reflects the environmental image to the first transmitting screen.
         - Transmitting screens - transmit the image under the construction, adding reflection of the monument and people, walking between the screens (providing illusion 3).
         - Representing screen - creates the illusion of invisibility, reflecting image from the second transmitting screen to the spectator directly.

We chose the center point of the main sight ground as the designed point of observation. A man, observing the construction from this point, will fill complete illusion of invisibility. We developed a scheme of reflected lines of sight in order to find curves of transmitting screens sections. Trapping and representing screens’ sections have to be rectilinear and lop-sided, as it is shown on the scheme. All the screens’ plans have to be sectors of circle with the center in the designed point of observation and narrowing up to the center.

English version is here:
http://altroom.org/eng/prism/index.htm
And here is our exposition of this project in ArtHouse, Kyiv
http://altroom.org/eng/d-h/index.htm

2006.
http://altroom.org/prism/index.htm
http://altroom.org/d-h/index.htm

Architecture of discrete space

    It is difficult to find a person who doesn’t know rules for playing tag. The game seems to be very simple: it is a field of 16 cells, 15 of which contain squares with letters. The task of the game is to place squares to arrange the letters they have in the right order. But when one tries to solve this puzzle it appears that tag-game is an absolutely different world with its own laws and rules. The process of transference in this world doesn’t correspond with the transference in another world. It is the process that determines life within this game.
       For instance, it is impossible to move the square plainly one cell down. It is necessary to do at least three moves. But there is also another possibility. With the help of a screwdriver one can pick two squares and out of the field, shift them and put back into the field. Thus, if we imagine that the field of the game is a different world, these moves represent the process of teleportation within this world as the squares changed their places without running the way between these positions. If one evaluates this process from inside the game world, following happened: squares A and B suddenly disappeared; for some time there was only vacuum instead of them and then they suddenly appeared being shifted from their positions to other. Not a bad trick indeed.

But we can change the rules of this game. Let us expand the field from 16 to endless number of cells and fill them all with squares to have none empty. This way we make the transference of the first type impossible. To keep this system dynamic let us make it possible to move squares shifting them. Hence, squares ? and B change their places. This process will not be teleportation if these two squares lie in the neighbor positions. In the other case, square A has must pass through all the squares on it’s way to position B.
       Let us add the third dimension. Flatness turns into space, squares into cubes, and a flat square into spatial. Thus, we get an environmental model with a fine spatial net owing to which we have a possibility to distinguish every cube that fills in a cell. We can imagine this cube to be a three-dimensional pixel {by analogy with digital technologies}. The objects that fill the space are groups of pixels alike.
       But let us get down to flatness and change the point of view. Let us imagine that there are no squares. Instead, every cell is filled in with information that determines all the physical characteristics of the cell through the depiction of the material it consists of. In this case, there is a possibility to scan the information of every of two cells and to give the information from the first one to the second and vice versa. Accordingly, the experiment with picking the squares out recurs but only on another level – “informational teleportation” is being realized. Moreover, it is possible to change the information of any cell to made-up and thus to change their characteristics to those which were impossible before.
        Applying the same changes to a spatial scheme we get a model of a controllable space. Can we compare this model with an objective reality?
       The space around us is filled with matter. In its turn, matter consists of ultimate particles {the simplest structural elements of matter which during the contemporary development level of physics do not have to be considered as a combination of other particles, according to Dictionary of Natural Sciences}. These elements have specific characteristics. Having learned how to change them, we will be able to create controllable space, which follow not the decrees of nature but invented laws.
       In case if devices able to read and set the characteristics of the ultimate particles are invented, there will be no need to transfer objects in space. If a specific object is needed on the given place, it is possible to generate it by changing the characteristics of the air particles instead of moving the object physically from one position to another. And we can do the same to eliminate a specific object from the given area. It is possible to change its characteristics and turn the object into air.
       This method of production not only differs from an existing one and creates new opportunities, but also changes a person itself, his or hers way of life and way of thinking. Valuable properties loose their meaning as they can be generated from air. Resources necessary for this process are generated as well. And a person has more time and possibilities for imagination and art.
      The task of space organizing is still an architect’s work. But a new architect differs from a usual one. He doesn’t work with builders because there are no builders. He doesn’t think about the organization of construction and assembling because a building is no longer erected but generated. He doesn’t order any standard elements from a factory because they are not needed, and a building is a solid piece of material with given qualities, the material which can even not exist in nature.
       Everything needed to generate a new building is
         1. its detailed digital three-dimensional model {elaborating of which is the final aim of the projecting process} that is to be the exact copy of the desired result set over the digital three-dimensional model of the building site.
         2. a scanning device necessary to scan the building site for the purpose of virtual combination of the digital three-dimensional model and the real site to ensure correct placement of the generated building.
         3. software to calculate the influence on an ultimate particle for conversion of its structure.
         4. a generative device.

The main tasks of an architect belong to a qualitatively different level owing to the attraction a wide range of specialists in various spheres {ecologists, sociologists, psychologists, philosophers, culture experts etc.} to the process of projecting. They are able to answer the questions out of the sphere of competence of an architect owing to a profound usage of computer technologies at every stage of designing, including the analysis of decisions. All of that will let us escape the necessity of any coordinative body.
           Main innovations in the structure of architectural workshop:
         1. Analytical centre. It participates on every stage of projection: analysis of initial data, selection of an optimal variant, and analysis of the decisions taken.
         2. The centre for elaboration of a detailed digital three-dimensional model.
         3. The centre for testing and demonstration of elements or a construction fully.
       There are two methods of spatial thinking: form-building which deals with three-dimensional objects and space-building which works with the environment of these objects.

        It seems that thinking with the help of space is more correct because we can exist only in it and it is impossible to appear inside an object {for instance, inside a concrete wall}. But today the leading way of thinking is a form-building one. Probably, it is caused by the fact that space is colourless while form is gay with colours; consequently, it attracts more attention.
       But if consider form and space as integral matter with different density of particles, there is a new way of reflection that works with form and space as with a single whole.
       Advantages of buildings generation comparing to assemblage:
         1. Considerable speed of erection,
         2. Generating of a building of a solid piece that lets to create an appropriate scheme of its hull,
         3. Absence of problems connected with a building being erected with difficult planning options,
         4. Ability to use materials with set characteristics that don’t exist in nature,
         5. Absence of inaccuracies according to absence of the process of assemblage itself,
         6. Absence of problems connected with elements transportation,
         7. Absence of problems connected with erecting on uncomfortable sites,
         8. Ability to examine both a whole building and its parts at preliminary generating,
         9. Simplification of correction procedure,
         10. Profound compliance of the result and project decision.

If create a generative device which would be constantly active, the space that is in its range will be controllable. To submit this space to imagination of the people living inside it, a possibility for a direct transmission of information to a computer should be created for them.
       But what is the benefit of that space? We got used to the fact that our environment is more or less constant. Changing it even a little is very difficult and that is why it has to be deliberate and thoroughly examined. To make the added alterations correct it is necessary to solve a range of multifaceted tasks. That is why a big variety of specialists in different spheres must take part in this process: architects, constructors, engineers, builders of different specializations and qualifications. And as the changes usually exist for a rather long time, no mistake is allowed; the issue demands full responsibility.
       But in our case, alteration of space is a task even a child can solve. With only move of his hand a child can create a flatness that will lie on the ground, float on the water, hover in the air. With the next move of the hand he will set its characteristics – colour, texture, transparency, density.
       In a minute he will build a house, in another one he will have his bed made or a table laid. After three minutes he will fly over the city, walk in the air or over water.
       A child turns into an architect, an architect without rules or limits, who is able to make everything that his imagination lets him create. A computer becomes his constructor, and a generating screen is now his momentary builder. A child creates a huge celestial waterfall and brushes his teeth in it before going to bed. He doesn’t watch TV because he is already full of impressions. It is impossible to impose any stereotypes on him because he realizes his abilities. He jumps from one rock to another and probably doesn’t even realize that he is just picking out the squares of the tag-game field.
   By Kyrylo Komarov & Mykhailo Karnaukhov

It is more interesting to reed it here (because, here you'll find many explaining images)
http://altroom.org/eng/discrete/index.htm

http://altroom.org/discrete/index.htm

We are accustomed to see static architecture. The one, created in brick’s image. I don’t protest against bricks, sometimes I even wonder, how they can stimulate some specific thoughts and emotions with their silence.
But the aspiration for freedom raises doubts in things, which seemed to be indisputable. Standing under majestic rock can once become boring and the ponderability or magnitude of this rock can loose a possibility to take one’s breath away. In such moments appears a desire to twist architecture in hands, throw it to the sea, or to mould your thoughts from it.
Sometimes I want architecture to become alive. I want to see it’s changes according to my mood or my requirements. This project appears to be a try to give architecture the possibility to change itself.

You can see this project here:
http://altroom.org/eng/water/index.htm

http://altroom.org/water/index.htm

Imagine that you have projected a hotel which resembles a prison a lot, and that somebody accused you that you hadn’t get to the image. The accusation is a rather serious one because an architect who doesn’t get to the image regularly is as good as a taxi-driver who cannot reach an accelerator pedal. But there is no sense to become depressed, it is foolish and doesn’t bring any practical results. To bear offender a grudge and take unexpected revenge on him when he forgets about it is much more correctly.

And while your offender takes his time to forget everything, you have your time to examine what is the image itself and how one can get to it. And you can start right now. Of course, if you were at home, you would open a dictionary (or an encyclopedia) to set everything up. But as it is impossible to do now, we will do it for you. So, an image is an ideal product of mental activity which is made specific through one form of mental reflection – sensation, perception etc. - or another. (www.glossary.ru) This means an image can be different: gustatory, olfactory, acoustic, tactile etc. It is very important to realize that according to domestic modern view on architecture, it is solely a question of visual image. And that is why, no one cares about other types of images. Not long ago, less than a year, a very interesting thing fell into our hands. It was an unusual camera. Its settings provided a special mode for taking pictures of visual images inside our subconsciousness. We were not able to remain the owners of this priceless device. It was stolen and an excellent opportunity to put in order even a little our idea of images and their place in architecture as well. And if we had not managed to photograph a film and had not been able to demonstrate you any pictures, we could have finished here. But now we can proudly display 36 unique photographs from inside of our subconsciousness. Of course, we didn’t take photos of whatever we saw. First of all, the camera wasn’t digital and the film wasn’t cheap. That is why it was stupid to turn from side to side and push the button. And secondly, we were taking the pictures of subconsciousness, and subconsciousness is not a landscape which looks more or less pretty from any perspective. One should behave it subtly.

So, as the result of our work we have three photographic albums, which are dedicated to:
images of architectural environment;
images of the objects concerned with architecture;
images of architectural notions.

you can see this albums here:
http://altroom.org/eng/obraz/

д. (www.glossary.ru).

1. образам архитектурной среды;
2. образам объектов, связанных с архитектурой;

http://altroom.org/obraz/

Wonderland.ua
http://altroom.org/kisi/
